TAKE A STAND

Global warming is real and will destroy the planet for human habitation in the near future if we don’t act. But what can you as one person do?

I asked that question to world renowned climate scientist Dr. James Hansen recently and his answer caught me off guard. He essentially said: Not much! Our individual actions are effectively meaningless gestures that are at best ineffective and are often actually misguided. The only real solution requires government policy action at the national level. There is no point – other than to make yourself feel better – worrying about your own carbon footprint. Instead, your resources and effort would be vastly better spent lobbying for legislative change. Although this may seem extreme, Dr. Hansen has been fighting this battle since the early 1980’s. He is a top researcher in the field and is still very active in research and publishing. If anyone understands the magnitude of the problem we face, it is him.

How can you help? Write letters to your representatives in congress. Make phone calls. Dr. Hansen recommends getting involved in the organization Citizens’ Climate Lobby, a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address climate change.

There is one more thing you can do, pledge to multiply your efforts by convincing others to act as well. This pledge asks you to fully commit to fight global warming AND to find, educate, and convince TWO other people who will be AT LEAST as committed as you are.
